Best air purifiers by room size

AHAM's two-thirds rule sorts these five purifiers from a small bedroom to about 680 sq ft (63 m²). I'd start with the Blueair 311i Max and move up only if your tape measure says so.

  1. Drawing of air purifier in a lit arch, with a small owl on top

    Best for most living rooms

    Blueair Blue Pure 311i Max

Suits about 330 sq ft (31 m²), going by HouseFresh's test. The ionizer can't be turned off.

  2. Drawing of air purifier in a lit arch, with a small owl on top

    Best for large open rooms

    Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max

AHAM's rule puts it near 615 sq ft (57 m²). It's heavy and has no wheels, so plan on leaving it in one place.

Best for a bedroom without an app

    Sharp FP-K50UW

Fits about 250 sq ft (23 m²), and you can switch its ions off. There's no auto mode or Wi-Fi.

Best large-room pick you can look at

    Blueair Blue Signature

HouseFresh recommends it up to 600 sq ft (56 m²), and the top works as a table. HouseFresh counts $179.81 a year to run it, at top speed around the clock.

  5. Drawing of air purifier in a lit arch, with a small owl on top

Best for a narrow spot in a small room

    Dyson HushJet Compact

A slim body for about 200 sq ft (19 m²). No CADR on the store page, so I can't check the coverage claim.

Get out the tape measure first. Length times width gives you the number that picks the purifier, and if the room opens onto another one, the EPA says to count the whole space.

Then use AHAM Verifide's rule of thumb: CADR should be at least two-thirds of the room's area, under an 8 ft ceiling. Multiply a smoke CADR by 1.5 and you have the largest room it suits. For wildfire smoke, AHAM asks for a smoke CADR equal to the room's square footage, which cuts every area below by a third.

I haven't run any of these. Test results are from HouseFresh, named where they appear, and ratings are the makers' as listed by Abt. HouseFresh tested two of the five in reviews I could read. The other three have ratings only.

Under 250 sq ft (23 m²): bedrooms and home offices

The Sharp FP-K50UW has a rated smoke CADR of 167 cfm, good for about 250 sq ft by the rule. It costs $219.99. Sharp's spec sheet lists ions as on or off, and Abt lists no auto mode and no Wi-Fi, so you'll be pressing the buttons yourself.

The Dyson HushJet Compact is the odd one. Abt lists 203 sqft (19 m²) of coverage, a width of 9.06 in and a price of $349. Abt's page shows no CADR number, so AHAM's rule can't test that coverage figure. Its filter claim needs care too. The features text says up to five years for the electrostatic filter, based on a 50% decline in CADR, while the same page's spec table recommends a change after one year at 12 hours a day. I'd only buy it if that narrow body solves a real space problem.

250 to 375 sq ft (23 to 35 m²): most living rooms

The Blueair Blue Pure 311i Max has a rated smoke CADR of 250 cfm and sells for $229. That works out to about 375 sq ft by the rule. HouseFresh's test came lower: it estimates a PM1 CADR of 220 cfm and recommends 330 sq ft (31 m²). HouseFresh also says its ionizer can't be disabled. My full 311i Max review goes through the quiet speeds, and they matter more than the headline.

Torn between this and the Sharp? This comparison splits them by room.

375 to 680 sq ft (35 to 63 m²): open plans

The Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max has a rated smoke CADR of 410 cfm, or about 615 sq ft by the rule, at $349. It weighs 16.2 lb and Abt lists no wheels. Pick its spot once. I didn't find an independent test of this exact model, so its rated top noise of 53 dB is the maker's number and nothing more.

The Blueair Blue Signature has a rated smoke CADR of 455 cfm, or about 680 sq ft by the rule, at $449. HouseFresh estimates a PM1 CADR of 400 cfm from its test and recommends 600 sq ft (56 m²). It also measured 59.6 dBA at top speed against a rated 55 dB, and just 40 dBA at speed 2, where it says the purifier still handles 343 sq ft (32 m²) at five air changes an hour. HouseFresh reports AHAM certified 3 ppb of ozone from its ionizer, which can't be switched off, and counts $179.81 a year for filters and electricity, at top speed around the clock.

Between these two, I'd pay $449 over $349 only if the room is one where a quiet speed has to do the work, or the table top earns its floor space.

When I'd skip all five

If you want cooking smells or VOCs gone, CADR won't help you choose. The EPA says the rating covers particles only and no widely used rating exists for gas filters. I'd also skip all five for a space larger than the biggest figure above. The EPA suggests several purifiers there, and HouseFresh's guide says you can add their CADRs together.

For ceilings above 8 ft, AHAM says to choose a unit rated for a larger room but gives no multiplier. Size up one band. What CADR means covers the rule in more detail, and the home sizer applies it to your floor area. All prices were checked November 2, 2026. Browse the rest in air purifiers.
