I start with your floor plan
Hearth Owl is a small guide to home and kitchen appliances, part of the Future Begins network. I'm Pavel Ryzhikh, and I work out which machines suit which homes.
Hearth Owl covers the machines a home runs on: dishwashers, washers, vacuums, air purifiers, coffee makers, multicookers. The Future Begins network runs it, and I write it.
Why start with the home
A lab score won't tell you whether a machine suits your life. A 24-inch dishwasher can't go in an 18-inch gap. A purifier rated for 200 sq ft won't do much in a 400 sq ft living room. Most buying mistakes I read about are mistakes of size.
So every model here has a fit range wherever I can find a basis for one, and the home sizer reads those ranges directly.
How a page gets made
I don't run a lab, and you won't find me telling you how a machine felt in my kitchen.
- I read what outlets such as HouseFresh, Expert Reviews and Tom's Guide measured.
- I read the maker's page or manual for the rated figures.
- I read the price on the maker's or a store's own page, and print the date.
- I look for where sources disagree, and say so when they do.
- I decide what I'd buy, and write down the catch.
What the scores mean
They're opinions from that evidence. A 7.1 means I think it's decent but flawed for the money. No machine produced it, and I don't average other people's numbers to reach it.
You can check all of this. Each article ends with direct links to what I read.
Questions people ask
Did you test these appliances yourself?
No. I work from published lab tests, makers' manuals, energy labels and current prices. Every measurement names the outlet that took it, and the link is under the article.
Where do the fit ranges come from?
From a rule I can point to, such as AHAM's two-thirds rule for air purifiers, or from a maker's stated capacity. Each product page prints its basis. Where I had none, the model has no range and the sizer doesn't limit it.
Can a brand pay for a better position?
No. Stores pay me a commission on some links, your price stays the same, and the affiliate disclosure page explains how that works.
Why are some models missing?
I only publish a model once I've read its price in US dollars on the maker's or a store's own page. If I couldn't, it waits until I can.
