What size refrigerator do I need: cubic feet by household

Three retailers and brands land near 5 cubic feet per adult, and Liebherr says half that or less. I'd use the common figure as a start, then let the doorway overrule it.

No standards body publishes a fridge size per person. What exists is rules of thumb from people who sell or review fridges, so treat all of it as a starting point. I haven't tested any fridge here. Capacities are maker ratings, and dimensions come from Danby's page and Abt's listings.

The per-adult rule, and who disagrees

Sharp, a brand with fridges to sell, says "at least 4 to 6 cubic feet of storage space per adult." Reviewed gives the same range. Abt says roughly 5 cubic feet for each adult. That's the common figure.

Then the bands drift apart:

Sharp: 26 or more for a large family

Liebherr is the outlier, at "around 2 to 2.5 cubic feet per person," or about 5 for two people and 10.5 for four. Its page doesn't explain the gap with the others. I'd lean toward the 4-to-6 figure, because Sharp, Reviewed and Abt all land there. McKinney's own FAQ says 4 to 6 per person too, yet its table runs high for small homes.

Children aren't adults. All of these say "per adult" or "per person" without settling that, so with two small kids in a family of four, I'd start lower.

Shopping habits move you more than headcount. Reviewed points to bulk buying and how often you shop. McKinney's says frequent cooks and hosts may need more space with fewer people. Someone who eats out most nights can drop a band.

Three sizes, three homes

One person in a studio or dorm. The Danby Designer holds 3.1 cu ft, below the 4-to-6 range, so I'd only pick it if you shop often. Danby lists 18.69 in wide, 20.19 in deep and 33.69 in high, with 47.4 lb to carry. The freezer is 0.87 cu ft, and the defrost type is Manual. Skip it if defrosting by hand sounds like a chore you won't do. It costs $399.99.

A family of four, with room to spare in front. The GE GTS22KGNRBB is rated at 21.93 cu ft, right in the band for four. It's a top-freezer, and ENERGY STAR says those tend to use the least energy. Now the catch. Depth with handles is 34.5 in, and Abt lists 63.5 inches with the door open at 90 degrees. That's over 5 feet from the wall to the edge of the door. Skip it for a galley kitchen. It lists at $1,199.

Five or six people who want it flush. The LG LRFLC2716S is rated at 26.5 cu ft. The case is 24.75 in deep, but the depth with handles is 29.13 in, so "counter-depth" doesn't mean the doors end at the counter. Abt lists 43.63 inches with the door open and 48.88 with the freezer drawer out. Rated energy is 632 kWh a year. At $3,199, it's for a kitchen where the look matters and the budget has room. All three prices are list prices, checked November 2, 2026.

Bigger isn't free. ENERGY STAR says that the larger the fridge, the greater the energy use, and that the most efficient models are typically 16 to 20 cubic feet.

Measure before you shop

The number on the label is the last thing to check.

  1. Height, width and depth of the opening. Abt asks for at least 1 to 2 inches behind, 1 inch above and 1/2 inch each side. Reviewed says 1 to 2 inches on all sides. Check the maker's manual, since it's the one that counts.
  2. Door swing, including any wall beside the hinge. Reviewed says most doors need their own width plus a couple of inches.
  3. The route in. Reviewed says to measure doorways, hallways and stairs, and doors can usually come off if an opening is just slightly narrow. Ask first.
  4. Weight, if you're in a walk-up. Abt lists the GE at 202 pounds and the LG at 249. Reviewed puts most full-size fridges between 200 and 350 pounds, and says not to move one yourself without the right gear and help.

Stated capacity isn't usable space, either. Reviewed notes that ice makers and water dispensers take up room inside, and that good shelving can make 20 cubic feet feel roomier than a poorly laid out 25.

The home sizer runs this rule for your household. The fridge list has the specs side by side. Doing laundry too? Read what size washer you need, and what a place setting means answers the same question for dishwashers.
